Beginning in 2014, the ACA, Affordable Care Act, required all Americans to have health insurance coverage that meets minimum essential coverage standards, also known as the health insurance mandate. If a consumer does not have health insurance they may have to pay a tax penalty, also known as the “shared responsibility payment” unless they qualify for an exemption.
The annual payment amount for 2014 is the greater of:
- 1 percent of your household income that is above the tax return threshold for your filing status, such as Married Filing Jointly or single, or
- Your family’s flat dollar amount, which is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, limited to a maximum of $285.
Members of federally recognized tribes and individuals who are eligible to receive services through an Indian Health Service provider are exempt from the shared responsibility payment. However, they must apply for this exemption through the Marketplace or when filing your federal income tax return.
While most tax preparers will assist persons with completing the forms needed to claim an exemption, for those who may be filing their taxes on their own and have any questions please feel free to call 1-877-209-1215.
